When Madhoo Chose Love Over A Big Bollywood Break With Amitabh Bachchan
Madhoo, who became a nationwide name after her debut in Phool Aur Kaante (1991) and later as the face of Roja, was one of the most sought-after actresses in the ‘90s. Her graceful presence in both Bollywood and South Indian films made her a pan-Indian star, way before the term was even a thing. But at the peak of her career, she surprised everyone by stepping back from films. In a recent candid conversation on Lehren Retro, she shared how she once turned down a film opposite none other than Amitabh Bachchan and the reason was personal.
Why Madhoo Stepped Away From Acting
During the interview, Madhoo talked about the difference in how South Indian films and Bollywood movies were shot back in the day. She appreciated the South’s preference for real locations but was not comfortable with Mumbai’s studio-based shooting culture in Bollywood. This phase marked the beginning of her decision to slow down on acting and love played a big part in it. She admitted, “Main koi bhi cheez vo feeling ke saath jab maine desire kiya na vo hone lagta tha. And I started feeling ki ab mujhe nahi jana hai set pe. And it so happened I fell in love. It so happened that I got married.”
The Offer She Let Go
In the same conversation, without revealing the movie’s name , Madhoo recalled a moment when she was offered a film with Amitabh Bachchan – a role that was later done by another actress, reportedly Soundarya. Her manager at the time Dugal ji encouraged her to take the film and delay the wedding. But Madhoo had already made up her mind. “I said, ‘Uncle, mere shaadi ka date fix hogaya hai’ and I said ‘Nahi, uncle.’”
Madhoo also shared how she met her husband Anand Shah. The decision to walk away from a tempting Bollywood offer turned out to be a meaningful one in her life journey.
