The 1999 romantic film Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam gave Bollywood one of its most loved onscreen pairs – Salman Khan and Aishwarya Rai. Their chemistry was so natural that it didn’t just win over audiences it also sparked real emotions between the two. Now, the veteran actress Smita Jaykar who played Aishwarya’s mother in the film has confirmed that the romance between the two co-stars indeed blossomed during the film’s shoot.
In a recent conversation with Filmymantra, Smita Jaykar openly shared “Yes, they fell in love there. The affair flourished there. And it helped the film a lot.” She described how their real-life emotions added a natural charm to the film. “Both of them had those moony-moony eyes and it was showing on their faces. That worked very well for the film,” she added
When asked if Salman Khan had spoken to her directly about his feelings for Aishwarya, Smita replied, “No, why will he tell me?” adding that a more personal friendship might have led to a different kind of conversation.
Talking about the actors’ nature in person, she fondly described Salman as a “brat” but in an affectionate way. “He’s a very nice person. He’s a very good-hearted, largehearted person,” she said. As for his temper, Smita reasoned, “Who doesn’t get angry if someone keeps instigating them? Everyone gets angry – it’s natural.”
Smita also spoke highly of Aishwarya’s looks and nature. “Even without makeup, she’s so pretty. At that time when I knew her, yes, she was very humble and grounded.” She recalled how Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam was Aishwarya’s first major hit after Jeans, which didn’t do well. Following HDCS, Aishwarya’s career saw a rise with films like Taal and Devdas.
Even though Salman Khan and Aishwarya Rai appeared together in only one film, fans continue to admire their pairing to this day. Their romantic chemistry remains unforgettable and is often revisited by Bollywood lovers.
While Aishwarya went on to marry Abhishek Bachchan in 2007 and has a daughter Aaradhya, Salman has chosen to remain single.
