For over three decades, the Bhatt brothers Mukesh Bhatt and Mahesh Bhatt have delivered some of Bollywood’s most iconic films. Among them, the 1991 hit Sadak, starring Sanjay Dutt and Mahesh’s elder daughter Pooja Bhatt which remains a classic. The film’s success became one of the reasons for their legacy as a powerhouse duo but it also marked Mahesh Bhatt’s final years in direction before he stepped away in 1999 after Kartoos.
Fast forward to 2020, when Mahesh made a much-talked-about comeback with Sadak 2, featuring Alia Bhatt, Sanjay Dutt, Aditya Roy Kapur and Pooja Bhatt. However, the film received harsh criticism for its weak storytelling and failed to recreate the magic of the original. While Pooja initially revealed it was Sanjay Dutt who pushed for the sequel, Mukesh Bhatt has now revealed the real story behind how Sadak 2 came into existence and it was because of Alia and Pooja.
“He Was Cajoled by His Daughters”
In a recent interview with Lehren, Mukesh Bhatt revealed that Mahesh Bhatt had no intention of returning to direction but his daughters emotionally convinced him. “He was cajoled by his daughters, Pooja and Alia,” Mukesh shared.
He recalled Alia’s heartfelt conversation with her father, where she expressed her wish to be directed by him at least once. “Alia chahti thi ki ‘Yaar papa yeh aap bahut unfair baat hai ki aapne Pooja ke saath itni saari filmein direct ki aur jab main actor ban gayi toh aapne direction chod di? Main chahti hu ki mere portfolio mein ek Mahesh Bhatt directed film bhi honi chahiye,’” Mukesh recounted.

According to Mukesh, it was this emotional request from both daughters that convinced Mahesh to return. “Unn dono betiyon ki emotional demand pe unhone, uspe raazi ho gaye,” he added.
“I Never Asked Him to Return”
Mukesh also clarified that he never asked his brother to make a comeback. “When he decided to quit, I respected his choice. I told him, ‘It’s your call; you have every right to decide what’s best for you,’” he said. Reflecting on his own stance, Mukesh added, “Nahi, main hamesha kehta hu ki ek baar jo aap cheez chhod do, toh fir udhar nahi jaana chahiye.”
Before Sadak 2 released, Pooja had once mentioned in a media interaction that it was Sanjay Dutt who suggested reviving Sadak. Speaking at a press event, according to the reports in The Quint she had said, “It was Sanjay Dutt who initiated it. He was the one who came to me and said ‘why were we not making Sadak 2?’… On his request, I went to tell them (Mahesh and Mukesh Bhatt) about Sanjay Dutt’s urge and desire to work in this film.”
However, Mukesh Bhatt’s latest revelation paints a new perspective Sadak 2 was more of an emotional comeback for a father moved by his daughters’ love than an actor’s request.
