How DDLJ Became the Turning Point for Jatin-Lalit After Years Of Uncredited Success: “People Weren’t Taking Us Seriously”

For every millennial, undoubtedly Bollywood music has always been an emotion and one of the reasons is the magic of the talented veteran composer duo Jatin-Lalit, who gave us timeless hits through Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikandar, Khiladi, Kabhi Haan Kabhi Naa, Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge, Kuch Kuch Hota Hai and more.

But success didn’t always bring them recognition. Despite creating some of the most memorable soundtracks of the late 80s and early 90s, Jatin-Lalit shared how their names often went unnoticed with credit largely going to actors and filmmakers. That was until Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge changed everything for both.

Jatin-Lalit: “After DDLJ, People Took Us Seriously”

In a throwback interview with Lehren, the brothers recalled their journey and how working with Aditya Chopra became a life-changing opportunity. Lalit revealed that Aditya, who was assisting his father Yash Chopra, always wanted to collaborate with them. When he began his directorial journey with DDLJ starring Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol, he approached the duo and ofcourse the result became a musical phenomenon!

Lalit said, “Humlog ka music hit ho raha tha but people were not taking us very seriously.” Jatin added, “Because we were always low-profile people, never spoke high about ourselves or banged the drum all the time. Picture hit ho jaati thi lekin credit director aur actor ko mil jaata tha. But after Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge, people really took us seriously – they said, ‘Nahi yaar, yeh log kaam bahut acha karte hai.’”

He continued, “After that, everything went very smooth till today,” expressing his gratitude to the Chopra family for believing in them and giving their music the recognition it deserved.
