Namit Malhotra: The Visionary Behind Ranbir Kapoor’s Ramayana

The initial preview of the film ‘Ramayana’, directed by director Nitesh Tiwari and produced by Namit Malhotra, was revealed on Thursday. It shows Ranbir Kapoor in the role of Lord Ram and Yash portraying Ravana. The standout feature of the video is undoubtedly goosebumps-inducing visuals and special effects. It is fair to assert that the creators were fully aware of their vision when they undertook the task of presenting the Ramayana in a fresh format on the big screen.

It is being advertised as Namit Malhotra’s ‘Ramayana’. Who exactly is Namit Malhotra? Allow us to explain.

Namit Malhotra is a distinguished Indian film producer and a veteran in visual effects (VFX), currently leading the production of the forthcoming Ranbir Kapoor-starring film Ramayana (also referred to as Ramayanam or Ramayana: Part 1), which is directed by Nitesh Tiwari. Producer & Financier: He is co-producing Ramayana through his company, Prime Focus Studios, in collaboration with actor-producer Yash’s Monster Mind Creations.

VFX Pioneer: He is the founder of Prime Focus Limited and serves as the CEO of DNEG, which was previously known as Double Negative. Under his guidance, DNEG has received numerous Academy Awards for its contributions to significant Hollywood films such as Inception, Interstellar, Dune, Tenet, and Blade Runner 2049, accumulating a total of seven Oscars thus far.

Industry Roots: He is the offspring of film producer Naresh Malhotra and the grandson of cinematographer M. N. Malhotra. He began his professional journey in a video studio located in a garage in Mumbai, eventually merging his initial enterprise into what evolved into Prime Focus, transforming it into a global leader in VFX.

In 2024, Malhotra secured the rights to Ramayana and has highlighted its potential to serve as a significant milestone for Indian storytelling on the international platform.

Cast & Crew of Ramayana: Directed by Nitesh Tiwari, featuring Ranbir Kapoor in the role of Lord Rama, Sai Pallavi as Sita, and Yash portraying Ravana. Co-produced by Malhotra and Yash. Budget & Scope: Regarded as the most expensive film in India to date—estimated at ₹600–835 crore, with Part 1 scheduled for release during Diwali 2026 and Part 2 in Diwali 2027.

Malhotra aspires to deliver VFX on par with Hollywood standards and a global cinematic experience, envisioning Ramayana as India’s response to films such as Oppenheimer, Forrest Gump, or Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon.

Namit Malhotra is the visionary behind the VFX and production prowess of the forthcoming Ramayana, leveraging his Oscar-winning expertise and international aspirations to reimagine one of India’s most revered epics for the screen. He is not merely a financier; he is a creative powerhouse who has evolved a garage-based studio into a premier VFX leader, now directing that capability into this ambitious two-part saga.
