Indian singer and composer Jasleen Royal, known for hit songs like Love You Zindagi, Heeriye, Sang Rahiyo and more, has been at the centre of criticism after her performance as the opening act for Coldplay’s India concert. While fans were thrilled to see the global band perform in India for five days, Jasleen’s act faced severe backlash. Not only did audiences express their disappointment but several renowned Indian musicians like Antara Mitra and Vishal Dadlani also took indirect digs at her performance. Now, singer Kailash Kher has joined the conversation voicing his opinion on the matter of Jasleen Royal.
Kaliash Kher Criticizes Jasleen Royal
In a recent interview with Hindi Rush, Kailash Kher was asked about the increasing use of autotune in the music industry. Addressing the topic, he shared his thoughts on how some artists rely on technology rather than talent which can be detrimental to their careers. While discussing this, he indirectly referenced Jasleen Royal’s Coldplay act, without taking her name, and stated, “Coldplay ke usme ek opening act tha, usme kisi artist ne gaya tha aur artist thik se nahi gaa rahi thi… iska matlab vo untalented hai (There was an opening act for Coldplay, and the artist was not singing properly… this means they are untalented).”

Kailash Kher on the Responsibility of Artists Representing our Nation
Kailash Kher emphasized that an artist performing on a global platform should be fully prepared and self-aware. He highlighted that representing India on an international stage comes with responsibility. He further explained, “Uss untalented artist ko pehle toh swayam khud accept karna chaye ki ‘nahi, main aafat na machan. Chaand choone mein jaldi na machau. Chaand bhi choohungi main, bhagwaan ki daya hai mujhpar ki mujhe badi stage mil rahi hai.. lekin main tayaar holkar jaungi, kyu? Kyuki mujhe Bharat ka naam bhi doobana nahi hai! Mujhe izzat bachani hai Bharat ki’. (That untalented artist should first accept that they shouldn’t create a disaster. There’s no rush to reach the stars. If I am fortunate to get a big stage, I should be fully prepared. Why? Because I must not tarnish India’s name. I have to uphold my country’s respect).”
Kailash Kher stressed that artists must take accountability for their craft before stepping onto significant stages. He also pointed out that international musicians should also be very cautious when selecting opening acts for their concerts in India, ensuring they meet a certain standard.
