Lady Gaga finally opens up on Joker: Folie à Deux’s Underperformance
“People sometimes don’t like some things,” Lady Gaga admitted. “It’s that simple. And I think to be an artist, you have to be willing for people to sometimes not like it. And you keep going even if something didn’t connect in the way that you intended.” Despite high expectations, the Joker sequel failed to match the massive success of the 2019 original which grossed over $1 billion worldwide. However, the sequel earned $207 million globally, falling short of expectations. Also, critics were divided and audiences gave it a disappointing Cinemascore rating.
While the film received praise for Joaquin Phoenix’s return as Arthur Fleck and Lady Gaga’s portrayal of Harley Quinn, it struggled to resonate with viewers. Some critics felt the musical elements did not blend well with the dark tone, making the film feel uneven. Still, Gaga’s performance was seen as a highlight. “She’s a compelling live-wire presence,” noted The Hollywood Reporter in their review.

She described the process as deeply personal, saying, “I feel some embarrassment and that’s a very vulnerable thing to share. But I think through making this album, I was able to really love myself through all of that.”
Lady Gaga finally acknowledged that dealing with criticism is part of the creative journey. She emphasized that fear of failure can be harmful if it takes control. “When that makes its way into your life, that can be hard to get control of. It’s part of the mayhem.” Her statement subtly tied into her album’s theme, embracing chaos as part of growth.
AS Lady Gaga prepares to return to music, fans are eager to see how her album Mayhem will reflect her evolution as an artist. Despite Joker: Folie à Deux not expectations, Gaga remains committed to her artistic vision, proving once again that resilience is key.
