DRDO Successfully Tests Advanced Missile System of Solid Fuel Ducted Ramjet technology

On February 3, 2026, India successfully tested a new missile technology called Solid Fuel Ducted Ramjet (SFDR). The test was conducted by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) at the Integrated Test Range in Chandipur, Odisha, at 10:45 AM.

Why Is This Important?

This successful test has placed India in an elite group of nations that possess this advanced technology. Only a few countries in the world have mastered this technology, and now India is one of them.

What Is Ramjet Technology?

Let’s understand this in simple words:

  • Normal missiles carry both fuel and oxygen to fly
  • Ramjet missiles are smarter – they take oxygen from the air around them
  • This makes them lighter, faster, and able to travel longer distances
  • Think of it like the difference between carrying a heavy oxygen tank while running versus just breathing the air around you

How Does SFDR Work?

The SFDR system has three main parts:

  1. Ground Booster Motor – Gives the initial push to get the missile flying
  2. Nozzle-less Booster – Helps it reach the required speed
  3. Ramjet Motor – Takes over and powers the missile for a long distance

All these parts worked perfectly during the test, which was monitored by senior scientists and tracking instruments along the Bay of Bengal coast.

What Are the Benefits?

  • Longer Range: Missiles can travel much farther
  • Higher Speed: They can fly faster than traditional missiles
  • Better Combat Advantage: Gives Indian Air Force an edge over enemies
  • Air-to-Air Capability: Can be used to develop advanced long-range air-to-air missiles

Who Praised This Achievement?

  • Raksha Mantri (Defence Minister) Rajnath Singh congratulated DRDO and the industry
  • DRDO Chairman Dr. Samir V Kamat praised all the teams involved

Which Organizations Were Involved?

Several DRDO laboratories worked together:

  • Defence Research & Development Laboratory
  • High Energy Materials Research Laboratory
  • Research Centre Imarat
  • Integrated Test Range

What Does This Mean for India?

This technological breakthrough strengthens India’s defense capabilities and shows the country’s growing expertise in advanced military technology. It’s a proud moment for Indian science and defense research, demonstrating that India can compete with the world’s most advanced nations in missile technology.
