Sometimes, life surprises you when you least expect it. For the actress Kathy Griffin that surprise came after heartbreak, healing and a chapter she thought that she had already closed.
Kathy Griffin Opens Up About a Love She Never Planned
The 65-year-old popular comedian recently broke her silence on a deeply personal phase of her life, a quiet romance with a man more than 40 years younger than her. In an essay written for The Cut, Kathy revealed that she’s on multiple dating apps and “accidentally” fell in love with a 23-year-old man after her divorce from her second husband Randy Bick.
“I Accidentally Fell in Love”
“I accidentally fell in love with a 23-year-old,” she wrote, explaining that his age also meant he didn’t carry “the usual sexism, misogyny, and biases that guys my age tend to have.” According to Kathy, that difference made her feel safe, seen and respected.
Kathy shared that she felt completely at ease with him. “It was nice to know that my heart could still feel like that in my 60s,” she wrote, adding that she truly enjoyed his company and admired his intelligence. “I thought he was smart. I thought he could roll in different worlds… we just clicked.”
Letting Go With Honesty
Despite how real it felt, Kathy knew the relationship came with its limits. She admitted that she carried too much emotional baggage and eventually had to “set him free”, even though he told her he could be with her forever.
“I really was in love with him,” she confessed. “He touched my heart.” Kathy said the relationship made her feel “sexy and special and smart and funny”, and for a while, it had many elements of something lasting.
Now, reflecting on her dating life, Kathy openly calls herself a “cougar” and says she’s comfortable choosing connection over society’s expectations. After all as she puts it, love doesn’t always arrive with a warning.
