Tu Meri Main Tera Main Tera Tu Meri Movie Review:
The title is a put-off, sounding like a stuck record.
When it takes off with the glossy visuals expected from Dharma Productions, the scene’s set for fun, flirting, a helping of calibrated humour.
But back-to-back songs in Croatia, shot like a travelogue, begin to discomfortingly resemble a tourist pamphlet.
The he’s-so-annoying hero who has the heroine’s lips curled with irritation, is so textbook Hum Tum (2004) that ho-ho, how funny, slips into ho-hum, how silly.
Writer Karan Shrikant Sharma’s young gen must be cool. So, after exhausting two rounds of irritating her, when Rehaan Mehra (Kartik Aaryan), the US-based owner of a successful wedding events company, tells author Rumi (Ananya Panday) that he’s married, she promptly smooches him and jumps into bed with him. Wow, kahani mein twist, is her aphrodisiac. She wakes up disappointed – he’s single, how boring. But let’s sing tuneless songs, smooch and bed around anyway.
The tourism commercial continues as dances with no new moves blandly go on between a couple that has as much sizzle as a firecracker doused in Croatian waters.
But it’s love, the kind that wants to end in marriage.
But there’s a problem. A problem so routine, it could’ve been solved by sitting across the table with their families. His single parent mom Pinky (Neena Gupta) and her widowed father (Jackie Shroff) are not the problem. The writing and direction are.
Director Sameer Vidwans and his writer want to continue with Dharma-staple wedding scenes, remixing old numbers without a new pep. They want to lengthen their film coz they feel what they’re going to say is so pathbreaking. But their circuitous ways towards a solution which have moments where Rumi gloats that her sister may not make it as a glowing bride, are way out of sync with a centre that yearns to revolve around strong family bonds.
Disappointingly, even Kartik Aaryan’s thickly showcased charm (shirt off, aunty swoons) isn’t pulled off with ease, the effort is killing.
For sure there are moments that bring on a chuckle here and there. But nothing flows organically. Ultimately the length makes the struggle as pointless as the long title.
Tu Meri Main Tera Main Tera Tu Meri – Watch Or Not?: Yes, on OTT.
