Dhurandhar Movie Review:

There are two flaws that straightaway dog writer-director Aditya Dhar’s spy adventure.

One, the intent may have been to use the first part of the two-instalment film to set up what happened before New India woke up to counter its belligerently violent neighbour. However, the focus is so much on building an elaborate scene of the gang wars and politics of Pakistan that nobody out here would connect with it. Honestly, who cares who’s in power and who’s murdering whom in the neighbouring country?

Two, the disconnect is heightened with Dhar’s failure to make it a thrilling watch. At over 3.5 hours, it is laborious, unexciting storytelling.

One must add that the trailer was perhaps misleading as it lingered on the unwatchable cruelty of Major Iqbal of ISI (Arjun Rampal), the violence of criminal-politician Rehman Dakait (Akshaye Khanna) and an Ajit Doval kind of IB chief on this side, Ajay Sanyal (R Madhavan).

But Iqbal and Sanyal are side players in a drama that essentially focuses on Indian agent Hamza (Ranveer Singh) and Rahman Dakait. Unfortunately, Ranveer Singh’s and Akshaye Khanna’s vulnerable-volcanic combination of moments gets lost in Dhar’s long and dull narration. Rakesh Bedi’s winning performance as a slightly comic Pak politician will also go unnoticed.

The disappointment is compounded especially since 26/11 happened to us despite the GOAT mukhbir’s presence in the power echelons of Pakistan.

If you’re looking for the josh of victory, Dhar has reserved it for the second instalment.

Perhaps the pace will pick up when New India and more of the ‘Unknown Men’ take over in the second instalment.

But this was a bad start, Aditya.

Dhurandhar – Watch Or Not?: A slow burn is best watched leisurely on OTT.

Dhurandhar Movie Review Score Rating: 2.5 out of 5 (i.e. 2.5/5)
