Once a celebrated actress and a singer Sulakshana Pandit, who was among one of the most loved faces of the 70s and 80s in Bollywood. Known for her grace and powerful voice, she starred alongside some of the leading men of her era and lent her voice to unforgettable songs but behind her successful career tells a different story.
After years of health struggles, Sulakshana breathed her last on November 6, 2025 at the age of 71. Confirming the news to PTI by her brother and the music composer Lalit Pandit shared that she passed away due to cardiac arrest around 7 pm after complaining of breathlessness.
A Life Once Full of Dreams, Turned Tragic
At the height of her fame, Sulakshana ruled both the screen and the recording studio but her personal life took a painful turn after her love for veteran actor Sanjeev Kumar remained unfulfilled. In a candid interview years ago with senior most journalist Bharathi Pradhan, Sulakshana once revealed that Sanjeev Kumar had proposed to her but he later denied it publicly and that moment left her completely shattered. And due to unable to recover from the emotional turmoil she slowly left the industry by stepping away from both acting and singing by the late 1980s.
Vijayta Pandit Opens Up on Her Sister Sulakshana Pandit’s Final Years
In an exclusive conversation with Lehren, Sulakshana’s younger sister Vijayta Pandit had opened up about her sister’s final years where the Love Story actress recalled how she and her husband, the late music composer Aadesh Shrivastava brought Sulakshana to live with them when she was struggling both emotionally and financially.
“When she was doing well, she took care of everyone in the family. So when she grew older it was our duty to look after her,” Vijayta shared how Aadesh was the one who insisted on bringing Sulakshana home. “Aadesh ji ne tabse le aaye the unhe hamare yaha. Sulakshana ji ki halat bahut kharab thi, she was retired, she had no money to maintain the house, toh main unko le aayi,” she said.
Selling Her Home & Distributing Her Savings
Vijayta also revealed that they helped her sister sell her old property and used the money to buy her a flat in Lokhandwala. “Unki property maine bikwa diya aur Lokhandwala mein flat dilaya. Baaki paise unhone sab bhai-behen ko de diye except Jatin-Lalit ko unhone nahi diya, par meri behen Sandhya, Maya sabko ghar dilaya,” she said, recalling how her sister’s final gesture was one of love and generosity.
Even after Aadesh passed away in 2015, Sulakshana continued living with Vijayta. “Main behen hu toh thik hai, par Aadesh jo jawai the, fir bhi unhone pyaar se rakha,” Vijayta fondly remembered the gesture made by her husband for her family.
The Secret That Was Never Revealed To Sulakshana Pandit
In the same conversation, Vijayta shared a shocking and heartbreaking truth something that she never told her sister. Sulakshana never knew that their sister Sandhya Pandit who went missing in the year 2012, had been tragically murdered. Vijayta revealed, “You won’t believe, Sulakshana ji ko aaj bhi yeh nahi malum hai ki she’s no more. I never told her because agar vo sunengi toh usi waqt marr jayengi!”
To protect her from the shock, Vijayta kept the truth hidden. “Main bolti hu ‘Nahi, vo acchi hai, Indore mein hai, phone karti hai.’ Sulakshana poochti thi, ‘Usko mera pyar dena,’” she said, adding that her sister never used a phone or electronics, so she remained unaware of the tragedy.
Sulakshana Pandit’s final years was full of emotional depth and though she lived away from the spotlight her legacy as a gifted artist and a loving sister remains timeless. Her story reminds us that fame fades but the bonds of love and compassion endure forever
