6 November 2025: Sulakshana Pandit died of a heart attack.
A 40-year gap that strangely bound them together in an inexplicable coincidence.
In her lifetime, he had refused to acknowledge her.
Singer-actress Sulakshana Pandit had withdrawn prematurely from the world when her heart was broken by co-star Sanjeev Kumar.
“Haribhai (Sanjeev Kumar) proposed to me,” she had said in an interview to me.
“I didn’t,” he retorted, angry with me for having quoted her on it.
Irrespective of who popped the question, his refusal to accept Sulakshana publicly broke her. Enough for her to retire into a world of her own.
Sanjeev Kumar and Sulakshana had costarred in Uljhan (1975), Apnapan (1977), Chehre Pe Chehra (1981) and Do Waqt Ki Roti (1988).
“She was never the same after Sanjeev Kumar broke her heart,” said sister Vijayta. The last 16 years were the worst when Sulakshana was practically bedridden, her mental state a cause for concern.
Meeting Sulakshana in her room upstairs where Vijayta (and late husband Aadesh Srivastava) looked after her till the end, was poignant. She remembered few people but was welcoming even as she confined herself to her room.
“My last support has gone,” cried Vijayta as Sulakshana died in her arms on her way to Nanavati Hospital. 71-year-old Sulakshana was declared dead on arrival.
