In January this year, Saif Ali Khan faced a night that could have changed everything. An intruder entered his Bandra home around 2:30 am breaking in through his younger son Jeh’s bedroom. Saif woke up to the sound of his staff shouting and rushed to protect his family. In the scuffle, the actor was stabbed six times after which he shockingly sustained serious injuries near his neck and spine.
He was rushed to Lilavati Hospital, where doctors performed surgery and removed a piece of the knife lodged close to his spinal cord. A week later, he was back home after recovering to his wife Kareena Kapoor Khan and their two sons.
Months later, in an interview with Esquire India, Saif has now reflected on the incident and how he feels about it now. Sharing his thoughts, he said, “There’s this crazy sense of how lucky one is because [the knife attack] was damn close. And to walk away relatively unscathed is nothing short of miraculous.”
Lying on the floor with stab wounds, Saif recalled how his entire life played before his eyes. “It could have been the adrenaline but I remember thinking life has been colourful and I’ve been privileged to be in many places… not just in terms of money – so many people have much more money but when I think of that rarefied atmosphere of Winchester, of all my travels with loved ones, the wine, my wife, my children…”
According to Saif, the intruder may not have realised whose house he had entered. But for Saif, protecting his wife and children was all that mattered. He said the incident has left his younger son Jeh seeing him as a brave figure, someone who stepped up in the face of danger.
Doctors later revealed that Saif had narrowly escaped paralysis. Today, the actor says he carries the experience as both a warning and a reminder of how fragile life can be.
