
Achyut Potdar’s journey was unlike most actors. The veteran star was born in 1934 and first worked as a professor in Rewa, Madhya Pradesh. Later he went on to join the Indian Army and served until 1967, retiring as a captain. He then built a stable career with Indian Oil Corporation where he worked for almost 25 years before retiring at 58.
Unlike most actors who start young, Potdar entered films at the age of 44. He slowly became a familiar face in both Hindi and Marathi cinema. Over the years, he acted in more than 125 films, balancing commercial hits with critically acclaimed projects. His film credits include Aakrosh, Ardh Satya, Tezaab, Parinda, Rangeela, Vaastav, Hum Saath Saath Hain, Parineeta, Lage Raho Munna Bhai, Dabangg 2 and Ventilator.
While his career was long and diverse, audiences remember him most as the strict professor in Rajkumar Hirani’s 3 Idiots. His simple line, “Kehna Kya Chahte Ho,” became iconic and continues to trend in memes and pop culture even today.
Potdar was also active on television. He appeared in classic shows like Bharat Ek Khoj, Wagle Ki Duniya, Pradhan Mantri, Aahat, Majha Hoshil Na and many others. His presence on the small screen made him a household name across generations.
The actor passed away on August 18, 2025 at Jupiter Hospital in Thane where he had been admitted due to health complications. His funeral is scheduled for August 19. Though the exact cause of his death is not known, his passing marks the end of a remarkable journey.
From professor to Army officer to veteran actor, Achyut Potdar lived many lives in one. His simplicity, dedication and memorable roles will continue to stay alive in the hearts of audiences.
