Veteran actress Kiran Joneja known for her powerful roles in Buniyaad and Mahabharat has finally opened up about her much-talked-about marriage with legendary filmmaker Ramesh Sippy. Their marriage in 1991 sparked attention for two reasons , the 17-year age gap and the fact that Ramesh Sippy had three children from his first marriage with Geeta Sippy. For years, whispers and headlines labelled Kiran a “homebreaker”. But now, in a recent chat with Lehren Retro, Kiran is sharing the full picture.
When asked about marrying a man who was much older than her, already married and also a father to which Kiran responded firmly, saying, “Nahi, divorce nahi hua tha but there was an understanding and there was not a separation kyuki Rohan (Ramesh Sippy’s son) was very young, uska final year tha and they did not want to disrupt his thing…”
She explained that although the legal divorce hadn’t happened yet there was already an understanding between Sippy ji and his then-wife. The delay in formal separation was because they didn’t want to disturb their son Rohan’s final year, while he was preparing for his exams. She continued, “…but life aise nahi hote but they did finally separate before he gave his exams. But that time there was an effort we made ki abhi nahi kare kuch bhi jo bhi hai, let him give his exams and then we will do whatever we need to do.”
Kiran Joneja clarified that she was never part of any disruption and the relationship with Ramesh Sippy grew while he was already emotionally moving on. They married only after he finalized his divorce. She also shared that despite not having children of their own, she shares a loving bond with Ramesh’s children – Rohan, Sheena and Sonya and considers them her own.
