Sunjay Kapur died on June 12, 2025, at the age of 53, because of a heart attack while participating in a polo match in the UK. His unexpected passing was received with disbelief, prompting members of the Kapoor family, such as Kareena Kapoor, Saif Ali Khan, and Malaika Arora, to visit Karisma to extend their sympathies.
Karisma Kapoor and Sunjay Kapur’s relationship was characterized by both public admiration and private strife.
Karisma Kapoor, a prominent Bollywood actress during the late 1990s and early 2000s, entered marriage with Delhi-based industrialist Sunjay Kapur in 2003. The wedding, conducted in accordance with Sikh traditions, was a lavish event that saw the attendance of numerous celebrities and industry figures. Sunjay, an alumnus of Harvard and MIT, was recognized for his business expertise and enthusiasm for polo.
After 11 years of marriage, Karisma initiated divorce proceedings in 2014. The initial petition for mutual consent was retracted in 2015 due to disputes regarding financial arrangements and child custody. Karisma accused Sunjay of inflicting physical abuse and mental harassment upon her, even alleging that his mother had slapped her during their honeymoon. She further asserted that Sunjay’s family had treated her mother poorly prior to the wedding.
Sunjay responded by alleging that Karisma married him for his financial resources and asserted that she manipulated their children during the divorce process. The legal dispute was fierce, with both sides submitting numerous complaints and counterclaims. In 2016, the Supreme Court stepped in, dismissing the FIRs lodged by Karisma against Sunjay and his family, while also awarding her custody of their two children, Samaira and Kiaan.
After the divorce, Karisma and the children continued to live in Mumbai. In spite of the hostility, the children preserved a friendly relationship with their father and his new spouse, Priya Sachdev. Sunjay wed Priya in 2017, and the children are said to have a close relationship with their stepmother and stepsiblings.
