Karisma Kapoor’s former spouse, Sunjay Kapur, passed away during a polo match in England on June 12. Sources indicate that he succumbed to a heart attack. The post-mortem report is pending to determine the precise cause of death. The divorce between Karisma and Sunjay Kapur was finalized in 2016 after an extended legal dispute.
In the wake of Sunjay Kapoor’s passing, an old interview featuring Randhir Kapoor has gained significant attention. Veteran actor Randhir Kapoor, who is Karisma’s father, openly conveyed his disapproval of his daughter’s marriage to the industrialist Sunjay Kapur, asserting that he opposed the union from the outset. He highlighted that the Kapoor family has always been independent and does not require reliance on the wealth of others. Randhir criticized Sunjay, referring to him as a “third-class man” and claiming that he possessed “debauchery in his system” and showed little regard for his wife. Additionally, he accused Sunjay of cohabiting with another woman during their marriage.
Karisma Kapoor wed business magnate Sunjay Kapur in 2003 following the conclusion of her engagement to Abhishek Bachchan in 2002. In 2014, Karisma Kapoor and Sunjay Kapur initiated divorce proceedings by mutual consent. Nevertheless, Karisma accused her spouse of domestic violence, while Sunjay claimed that the actress married him solely for financial gain.
In 2016, their divorce was finalized. During this period, Karisma’s father, Randhir Kapoor, expressed his disapproval of the marriage during an interview. In response to Sunjay’s accusations regarding Karisma, Randhir Kapoor remarked, “Sunjay is a third-class man… Everyone is aware of our credentials. We are Kapoors. We do not need to pursue anyone’s wealth. We have been fortunate not only with financial resources but also with talent that can sustain us throughout our lives.”
Following the finalization of their divorce, Karisma was awarded custody of their children [daughter Samaira, son Kiaan], while Sunjay was granted visitation rights. According to DNA, Sunjay provided Karisma with Rs 70 crore in alimony. An ANI report indicated that he also invested Rs 14 crore in bonds for their two children, which generate Rs 10 lakh annually in interest.
