Veteran actress Aruna Irani, Mehmood ’s former love interest, recently opened up in a candid chat with Lehren Retro about why their much-talked-about relationship never turned into marriage. Despite Mehmood being the man who gave her the breakthrough in her career and despite the two having strong feelings for each other, the two never tied the knot and Aruna says now with a smile, “Thank God!”
Why Aruna & Mehmood Broke Up After Years of Support
Speaking openly, Aruna said their relationship ended due to Mehmood’s family’s disapproval. “Because his family said, ‘Nahi, kaam nahi karenge aap Aruna ke saath koi’ (No one will work with Aruna), he stopped working with me,” she revealed. That professional distance naturally led to personal distance.
She added, “Main toh kahi bhi nahi rahi. Na toh unset woh relation tha hi nahi mera aur ab main kya karu? (I was nowhere. I had no relationship with that side anymore, so what could I do?).” She found her purpose instead in taking responsibility for her own family. “Bhagwaan ne ek responsibility de di toh kya hua, I could come out of it (God gave me responsibility, and it helped me move on).”

After the breakup, Aruna went through a phase with no work. But soon, director Dada Kondke offered her a dance number in the Marathi film Andhla Marto Dola. “Maine vo gaana kiya tha but I never thought ki main heroine banne ke baadh yeh gaana kar rahi hu, vo complex maine kabhi nahi rakha.(I did that song, but I never felt complex about doing it after being a heroine.)”
She’s proud of the path she chose and even now, at almost 80, Aruna continues to act, direct and stay active in the industry, grateful for all that she’s learned.
Reflecting on the past, she said, “Agar shaadi ho jaati toh Bombay to Goa ke baad ghar pe baith jaati, khana bana rahi hoti jaise pehle ki heroines karti thi… main toh Thank God hi bolti hu. (If we had married, I would’ve ended up cooking and staying home after Bombay to Goa, like heroines did earlier… I just say Thank God.)”
Aruna Irani and Mehmood may have shared love and admiration, but life had different plans. Through heartbreak came a long-lasting career, financial independence, and creative freedom — things she cherishes even today.
