Dr. Salvador Plasencia, the California-based physician accused of illegally providing ketamine to actor Matthew Perry in the weeks leading up to his death has agreed to plead guilty to four counts of drug distribution. The agreement, filed in a Los Angeles federal court, comes with a possible maximum sentence of 40 years in prison.
According to the plea agreement, Dr. Plasencia supplied Perry with twenty vials of ketamine, lozenges, and syringes between September 30 and October 12, 2023. The actor was already undergoing legal treatment with the drug for depression under medical supervision, but prosecutors say he began seeking more than what was prescribed.
Plasencia admitted to obtaining additional ketamine through another doctor, Mark Chavez, who has also pleaded guilty. Text messages shared in Chavez’s plea revealed that Plasencia referred to Perry as a “moron” and speculated on how much money he could make from him. One message read, “I wonder how much this moron will pay,” sent as the two arranged a drug exchange.
As part of his guilty plea, Plasencia admitted that he personally injected Perry with ketamine at his home on two occasions and once even in a parking lot near the Long Beach Aquarium. He also showed Perry’s assistant, Kenneth Iwamasa, how to administer the drug and left behind extra vials. Later, he met up with Iwamasa again to hand over more ketamine, court documents show.
Federal prosecutors have described the case as involving an underground network of medical professionals and dealers. Five individuals, including Plasencia and another woman named Jasveen Sangha , who has pleaded not guilty were charged in connection to the actor’s overdose. The dose believed to have killed Perry is alleged to have come from Sangha.
None of the defendants have been sentenced yet, but with Plasencia’s guilty plea, the case takes a significant turn. Perry, 54, was found dead in his hot tub on October 28, 2023.
