Bollywood vs. the Emergency: 50 Years On, PM Modi Reminds the Nation of a Dark Chapter

On Wednesday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi commemorated the 50th anniversary of the Emergency with a sharp criticism of Congress, asserting that no Indian will ever forget how the essence of the Constitution was breached during that time.

Through a series of posts on the social media platform X, Modi reiterated his government’s dedication to upholding constitutional values. He described the Emergency as one of the most somber episodes in India’s democratic narrative.

Here are notable Bollywood films that portray India’s Emergency period (1975–77) on its 50th anniversary:

Aandhi (1975): – Directed by Gulzar and featuring Sanjeev Kumar alongside Suchitra Sen. – This political drama is loosely based on Indira Gandhi; it was banned during the Emergency due to its perceived political resemblance. Following the conclusion of the Emergency, it was re-released.

Kissa Kursi Ka (1977): – A pointed political satire by Amrit Nahata, which allegorizes the Emergency regime and includes Shabana Azmi in its cast. – It faced a ban during the Emergency, with the government destroying its prints.

Indu Sarkar (2017): – A period thriller by Madhur Bhandarkar that dramatizes the effects of the Emergency on an ordinary woman (portrayed by Kirti Kulhari), highlighting themes of repression and moral decay.

Emergency (2025): – Directed by Kangana Ranaut, who also stars as Indira Gandhi, this eagerly awaited political drama focuses on the Emergency.
