Born Hamid Ali Khan, the actor Ajit is recognized as one of the most prominent villains from Bollywood’s golden era. He appeared in films such as Kalicharan (1976), Zanjeer (1973), and Yaadon Ki Baraat (1973), and was famously known as the ‘Lion,’ portraying the antagonist in numerous films of that time. Eventually, it became his son Shehzad Khan’s opportunity to follow in his father’s footsteps, even imitating his father’s distinctive cadence in several roles. However, Shehzad claims that his father was not particularly supportive of his choice to pursue acting and declined to assist him in any manner.
One can only speculate about the influence an actor like Ajit wields in the industry; however, he was resolute that his son should achieve success independently. In a conversation with Lehren Retro, Shehzad reflected on his father’s choice, stating, “I never received any assistance from my father concerning my acting career. When I expressed my desire to become an actor, he informed me that he would not produce a film to launch my career. He also mentioned that he would not recommend me to any producer or director and preferred that I kept my relationship with him private.”
He remarked, “I believe my father felt somewhat insecure regarding my pursuit of acting. He likely feared that if I failed to meet the expectations he established, it could tarnish his reputation within the industry.” Shehzad expressed that he honored his father’s desires and would maintain the confidentiality of their relationship, unless someone deduced it from his name and address. Ultimately, he overcame this obstacle and appeared in films such as Andaz Apna Apna (1994), Qayamat se Qayamat tak (1988), and Bharat (2019).
