Manoj Kumar, The Indian Actor, Director and Filmmaker, Has Passed Away At The Age of 87 In Mumbai

Veteran Indian actor and filmmaker Manoj Kumar, celebrated for his patriotic films and affectionately known as ‘Bharat Kumar,’ passed away at the age of 87 on Friday at Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital.

Medical reports indicated that he died from cardiogenic shock resulting from an acute myocardial infarction, a serious heart attack. In recent months, he had also been struggling with decompensated liver cirrhosis, which significantly impacted his health, as reported by news agency ANI.

Kumar was admitted to the hospital on February 21, 2025, after his health deteriorated. Despite the medical interventions, his condition continued to worsen, ultimately leading to his death at the hospital in Andheri.

Born Harikrishna Giri Goswami on July 24, 1937, Manoj Kumar became a prominent figure in Hindi cinema, particularly known for his films that emphasized nationalism. His portrayal of patriotic roles earned him the lasting title of ‘Bharat Kumar.’

He gained significant acclaim through films such as Shaheed (1965), Upkar (1967), Purab Aur Paschim (1970), and Roti Kapda Aur Makaan (1974), many of which he also directed. His role in Upkar was pivotal in establishing his patriotic persona, solidifying his famous nickname.

In addition to his patriotic films, he appeared in numerous other notable movies, including Hariyali Aur Raasta, Woh Kaun Thi, Himalaya Ki God Mein, Do Badan, Patthar Ke Sanam, Neel Kamal, and Kranti.

For his remarkable contributions to Indian cinema, he was awarded the Padma Shri in 1992 and the esteemed Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 2015. His legacy is firmly embedded in the history of Indian film, particularly for his steadfast representation of patriotism on screen.

The news of Manoj Kumar’s passing evokes memories of his vibrant personality and the significant influence he had on Indian cinema. His unparalleled contributions as both an actor and filmmaker will be profoundly missed throughout the industry.
