Mumtaz Jehan Begum Dehlavi aka our very own Bollywood’s inestimable beauty queen, Madhubala! Known for her enchanting screen presence and remarkable artistic talent, lived a life that was far from perfect. Coming into the world on February 14, 1933, her life began with hardships that were difficult to even hear about. Born with a ventricular septal defect – a congenital heart disorder and as a fifth among eleven siblings, she stepped into the film industry at very early stage of her life at eight to support her family – her life came with difficulties.
Madhubala’s father Ataullah Khan who was initially against her working in films but when he saw an opportunity for financial stability, he changed his mind. And from that very moment on, he started controlling every aspect of her life both personally and professionally – her career, finances and even personal choices. Later, despite her growing fame Madhubala lived under strict restrictions, who was not allowed to have friends, attend social events or make independent career decisions. And though she became the country’s highest-paid actor other 1950s, she had little control over her own success.
Even when her health was becoming worse, Madhubala continued to work under her father’s watchful eye. Popularly called as ‘The Beauty with Tragedy’, due to her heart disorder she often faced breathlessness and even vomiting blood. Yet, she wasn’t taken good care of to safeguard her health.
Also, her love life was equally difficult, who fell in love with Bollywood’s most charismatic hero Dilip Kumar and their relationship reportedly lasted for nearly nine years. However, when he asked her to break ties from her father (who was completely against their marriage) to marry him, without a second thought she went on to chose her family and they painfully parted ways. But when she fell in love again and got married to Bollywood’s timeless iconic actor-singer Kishore Kumar, this relationship also faced struggles due to religious differences and family pressure from both father and in-laws. Later, as her health worsened Madhubala received very little emotional support, making her final years even more painful.
By early 1969, Anarkali of Indian Cinema’s condition had completely deteriorated significantly, suffered from jaundice and her leath rapidly declined, then, on February 23, just nine days after her 36th birthday she took her last breathe and Madhubala was laid to rest at the Juhu Muslim Cemetery in Mumbai.
And her father Ataulla Khan, who had once dictated every part of her life left deeply regretful after his daughter’s passing. Also, according to the late actress and talk show host Tabassum, Madhubala’s father carried baggage full of deep sorrow by daily visiting her grave, bringing her favourite flowers and used to often shed tears.
The Venus Queen of Indian Cinema, Madhubala’s story is a reminder that even brightest star in the sky can face darkness behind the screen. Despite being loved by millions, she longed for love in her own life – but that wish clearly remained unfulfilled. While her father’s regret came too late and her struggles remained hidden behind the glamour of Bollywood.
