Colman Domingo’s Film ‘Sing Sing’ Makes History As First Film To Release In Theatres & Prisons At The Same Time

The Oscar-contending prison drama Sing Sing film starring Colman Domingo is set to make cinematic history by being released simultaneously in theatres and over 1,100 correctional facilities across the U.S. Starting from January 17, the film will return to more than 500 theatres and be accessible to nearly one million incarcerated individuals through a collaboration between distributor A24, Rehabilitation THrough the Arts (RTA) and Edovo, a nonprofit providing educational programs in prisons.

Directed by Greg Kweder, Sing Sing is inspired by the true story of incarcerated men at the Sing Sing Correctional Facility New York who founded the RTA program. Colman Domingo portrays John “Divine G” Whitfield, a wrongfully convicted man who used theatre as a medium for transformation. The film’s cast includes former prisoners, such as Clarence “Divine Eye” Maclin and Jon-Adrian “JJ” Velazquez who play fictionalized versions of themselves.

Velazquez, who had his conviction overturned after 23 years, shared, “Education and the arts gave me hope during my wrongful conviction, restoring my faith in humanity.”

Initially released in July 2024, Sing Sing garnered critical acclaim, earning a 97% score on Rotten Tomatoes and multiple award nominations including Golden Globes, Critics’ Choice and Independent Spirit Awards. Domingo, who is an awards-season frontrunner, described the project as “a story of resilience and transformation”.

The film broke traditional norms by paying all contributors – actors, crew and even Domingo equally! Furthermore, it premiered at Sing Sing Correctional Facility and screened at the San Quentin Film Festival, the first U.S. prison-hosted film festival.

“Storytelling has a unique power to spark hope,” said Edovo CEO Brian Hill, emphasizing the film’s mission to inspire transformation. Despite its connection to the Sing Sing prison, the facility itself will not host a screening due to lack of access to Edovo’s tablet content.

Sing Sing showcases the transformative power of art and stands as a testament to resilience, aiming to redefine narratives around incarceration and human dignity.
