The pair, who were married for two years, cited irreconcilable differences as the grounds for their separation. According to People, Jolie and Pitt finalized their divorce papers on Monday, December 30.
“More than eight years ago, Angelina filed for divorce from Mr. Pitt. She and the children left all of the properties they had shared with Mr. Pitt, and since that time she has focused on finding peace and healing for their family,” stated Jolie’s attorney, James Simon. “This marks just one phase of a lengthy process that began eight years ago. Frankly, Angelina is exhausted, but she is relieved that this particular aspect is concluded,” the lawyer further commented.
Angelina Jolie initiated the divorce proceedings on September 19, 2016, shortly after a private flight during which she alleged that her then-husband, Brad Pitt, was abusive towards her and their six children. Four months later, the former couple released a joint statement indicating that they had agreed to manage their divorce privately.
The 49-year-old Oscar-winning actress and director Angelina Jolie and the 61-year-old Oscar-winning actor Brad Pitt were one of Hollywood’s most notable couples for 12 years. They had been in a romantic relationship for a decade before marrying in 2014. Jolie filed for divorce in 2016, and a judge officially declared them single in 2019.
Brad and Angelina initially encountered each other in 2004 during the production of the film “Mr. and Mrs. Smith.” However, since Brad was still married to Jennifer Aniston at that time, the pair did not officially become a couple until 2005.
