Veteran actor Pradeep Kumar, a Bengali-born superstar who made his mark in Bollywood during the 1950s and 60s, is celebrated for his kindness and humility. Loved by leading female actors, who felt safe and comfortable around him, he starred alongside icons like Vyjayanthimala, Meena Kumari, Madhubala, and Asha Parekh.
In a rare interview with Lehren, Veteran Actor Pradeep Kumar shared anecdotes from his career and personal life. He entered the film industry at just 19 as a camera assistant in Bengali cinema. Despite belonging to a Bengali Brahmin family, where joining the film industry was frowned upon, he broke barriers to become an iconic figure with a charm that remained unmatched throughout his career.
Discussing his early days, Pradeep Kumar recalled the nervousness of his debut film, Anand Math, released in 1952. He revealed how he frequently drank water out of anxiety during the shoot.
In the interview, the veteran actor also spoke candidly about the industry, addressing the topics of controversies and on-set romances. Unexpectedly, he opened up about his enduring love for the tragedy queen, Meena Kumari. Reflecting on the impact of romantic scenes, he said, “Romance is a very natural thing. After a romantic scene, there is a kind of hangover, and in that state, one sees various dreams.” He added with very heartfelt emotion, “I say it very frankly that I still love Meena Kumari.”
