Mirzapur 3 Critic Review:

A map of Uttar Pradesh with places marked and a snake like crawl from one point to another, makes its appearance once in a while, perhaps to show how widespread the action is this season.

Kaleen Bhaiya (Pankaj Tripathi) whose menace and substance held it together majestically, took three bullets last season and is missing in action.

It tells on the show.

The one-line plot that runs, sorry, drags on over 10 episodes, is a fight for Kaleen Bhaiya’s gaddi (chair, throne of power). Bal (brawn) and buddhi (brain) are required to become the baahubali.

Two main male contenders, Guddu Pandit (Ali Fazal) and Sharad Shukla (Anjumm Shharma) with one female Chief Minister Madhuri Yadav (Isha Talwar) out to eliminate the underworld, collide most times, also collude at other times.

Several writers (Apurva Dhar Badgaiyann, Avinash Singh Tomar, Vijay Narayan Verma) and two directors, Gurmmeet Singh and Anand Iyer, labour to make the power play as engaging as the first two seasons.

But without the dramatics and dynamics that prevailed in the Tripathi haveli with Akhandanand urf Kaleen Bhaiya, his raunchy father (Kulbhushan Kharbanda), his wayward son Munna (Divyendu Sharma) and his saucy wife Bina (Rasika Duggal), the show runs helter-skelter like leaderless infantry.

Scores of unrecognised new faces and unintroduced characters come in and out as conniving politicians and cruel goons, both groups without morals or merit. Let’s just call them unknowns.

The double role of Bharat/Shatrughan Tyagi (Vijay Varma) is reduced to one. Father Devdutt alias Daddu (Lilliput) alternates between family bonds and bloodshed. Snorting and snarling Guddu Bhaiya pumps iron, bashes heads and kills with impunity to establish that he means business with his meanness which comes without brains. His track with Golu (Shweta Tripathi Sharma) meanders as all of them consort with unknowns that don’t add interest value.

Sharad Shukla has so much footage, several with unknowns, that you can’t wait for it all to come together.

An item number called Zarina (Anangsha Biswas) flashes cleavage, unknowns (the male variety) dance at celebrations, and top cop Dubey (Manu Rishi Chadha who must lose weight) gets in and out of uniform at the CM’s bidding.

Upright lawyer Ramakant Patil (Rajesh Tailang) continues to cling to his ethics even when incarcerated until he begins to question his own principles. The jail sequences are awash with some more unknowns.

‘Kaleen bhaiya gone, Guddu Bhaiya on,’ ‘Majboor se majboot’ are samples of the dialogues that are written with the mandatory sprinkle of filthy abuses. There’s even a kavi (poet) running around who weaves dirty words into his creative work.

Priyanshu Painyuli (as Robin Agarwal), Sheeba Chaddha (as Ramakant’s wife), Meghna Malik (as Sharad’s mother), Anil George (as hafeem king Lala) and two dozen other actors stray in and out. Bodies pile up, women get belted and slapped, men get tortured, conspiracies and plots are hatched and botched.

The Guddu-Sharad baithaks with gangsters (read, more unknowns) and the fights to become the uncrowned baahubali, get tiresome. Essentially, the gangsters limp along and you can’t wait for Kaleen Bhaiya to return to energise the show. He does and that’s when it gets lively and comprehensible. But rather late, almost at the end of the season.

Of course, there are enough characters left un-killed for another season. Oh yes, Bina (who is wishy-washy and doesn’t have much to do this time around) has delivered a vansh for the Tripathi parivar. But really, the makers need to come up with strong characters in impactful situations and not pack in too many goons and unknowns, the next time around.

Mirzapur 3 – Watch Or Not?: If you skip this season and go to Season 4, you wouldn’t miss anything.
