Google and iFixit Will Soon Start Selling Parts for Pixel Fold So You Can Repair the Phone on Your Own

Google offering massive trade-in values for iPhone towards its Pixel Fold

Smartphone companies are slowly opening up to the idea of users' being able to repair their phones. While repairing a phone on your own is a daunting task considering how modern phones are very fragile, a lot of people are more than okay with the idea of doing it. Now, Google has decided to start offering parts for Pixel Fold by teaming up with iFixit, and becoming the first company to do so because Samsung still doesn't offer parts for its foldable phones.

Pixel Fold will be the first foldable phone in history to become a part of the self-repair service offered by Google

Now, I do understand why companies would want to avoid offering parts for foldable devices. They are fragile and can easily break, and repairing them can be a pain. But Google thinks otherwise regarding Pixel Fold because the company wants the users to repair their devices on their own, which is a bold step.

Now, the parts are not available at the time of writing, but after speaking to folks over at 9to5Google, the company has mentioned how it will be handling the repairs. This is the statement.

We offer mail-in and walk-in repair services for Pixel Fold outside warranty period (out of warranty repair). We are also planning parts, repair guides and tools available via iFixit. For Pixel Fold specifically, we are offering Extended Warranty (Preferred Care), which will give customer coverage against accidental damages and mechanical breakdowns after the warranty period ends. The customer can buy either a month plan or a one time payment. With this service, the customer can get their Fold repaired – or if needed, replaced – with a deductible.

It is worth noting that the parts that Google will be selling for the Pixel Fold will involve screens, batteries, and other spare parts. The source has confirmed that internal displays will also be available, which does sound like a really nice thing, but considering how difficult it is to repair a foldable phone.

I would highly suggest that if you do not have any experience n repairing your phone, then it would be better to take the Pixel Fold to the nearest Google service center and have them sort you out. I am really concerned about how the phone turns out to be, especially after hearing the horror story that we shared earlier about how a unit managed to die in just four days because of a design flaw.
