It seems that YouTube is apparently following in Netflix's footsteps as the platform is showing interest in the option to stream games, and while it might sound like a good thing. If you need your memory jogged, Google also had Stadia, a much more high-profile game streaming service that it killed earlier this year, so it is a little strange to see the company trying once again.
Google wants to bring game-streaming service to YouTube, but we are not sure if it's a good idea
Based on information from The Wall Street Journal, Google has sent an internal email to employees, and the email in question talks about how the company wants employees to test out a new feature that has been made for YouTube. The feature is being called "Playables" for now, and it would allow users to play games on the YouTube app. This feature would extend to both the iOS and Android versions of the app, as well as the browser version of the platform.
At the time of writing, the report from the WSJ only talks about one game that could come to YouTube as a part of the Playables, a game that already exists on the Google Play Store. This could indicate that Google is not planning on adding AAA titles to the service but rather some casual titles that people can play without having to worry too much about the data overhead that comes with streaming.
Honestly, this feature doesn't make sense to me, but then again, I have never been the person to try cloud gaming, so I cannot be sure if this will be a hit or a miss. At the same time, I am not sure if YouTube getting this feature makes a lot of sense, all thanks to Google's history with its own projects being canceled, Stadia comes to mind when you think about it, and while I do agree that the model Stadia followed looks a lot different than Playables, it makes one wonder just how far Google is willing to go to make a service such as this stay in its roster.
