Instagram is used by millions to post all sorts of content. One reason why it can be frustrating and cause anxiety issues if your kid is using Instagram unmonitored. To ensure the safety of kids/teens, Instagram has introduced a new feature called Supervision. This feature lets you keep an eye on your child’s activity and protect them from potential bullying, harassment, and other threats. Let’s learn what is Supervision and how you can set up supervision on Instagram to protect your kids.
What Is Supervision on Instagram
Supervision is a recently introduced feature/tool on Instagram that enables parents to monitor their kid’s social media presence. With Supervision enabled, you have access to various types of data about your kid’s account activity. Plus, it also provides some additional tools to limit your kid’s access to Instagram. Here are some things you can do with Supervision on Instagram as a parent or even as a kid.
If you are a parent, you can:
- Set a time limit for Instagram usage
- Set scheduled breaks
- View how much time your kid is spending on Instagram
- View which accounts they’re following
- View accounts that are following your kids
- View which accounts are blocked by your kid
- View their privacy settings, content sensitivity settings
- See who can message your kids
- See who can add your kid to a messaging group
Additionally, parents will receive notifications in their own Instagram activity feed every time these settings are changed by their kid.
If you are a kid, you can:
- See a preview of what parents can see in the Family Center
- See a preview of what parents see when supervising
- Report someone on Instagram and notify your parents
Note: The kid aged between 13-17 can be supervised or monitored using Supervision on Instagram. And the parent must be 18 or older in order to monitor their kids.

Eligibility Criteria for Parents and Kids:
- Parent must be at least 18 years old
- Both parent and kid must agree to be supervised

How effective these criteria will be is anybody’s guess though.
