Majority of you out there are going to take the over the air route in order to install iOS 15 beta and iPadOS 15 beta. Makes sense, since it is easier to digest and does not involve too much hassle such as cables or computers.
But, the downside to performing an over the air update is very obvious - you do not get the same performance benefits of a clean installation. Or, an installation from scratch.
Just like any other beta, you can download and install iOS 15 beta and iPadOS 15 beta onto your device from scratch to test out. But it is not an easy process. It involves downloading an IPSW to your computer, setting up Xcode beta with your developer account, then connecting your iPhone and iPad to your Mac using a Lightning or USB-C cable, and then restoring everything using Finder. Make Sure Your iPhone and iPad is Compatible
We cannot emphasize on this enough. If you have a compatible iPhone and iPad, only then you can test out iOS 15 and iPadOS 15 beta. Check out whether or not you have a compatible device by having a look at the list posted here:
Sign up for Apple's Developer Program
You must have access to Apple's Developer Program, and we are sure you already knew that. So, sign up here.
Download and Setup Xcode Beta
Once you have signed up to the developer program, sign into your account and download the latest Xcode beta, launch it and set it up properly using your credentials.
Backup Everything
You will lose all your files and settings therefore take a backup of everything using iTunes, Finder or iCloud.
Download the iOS 15 and iPadOS 15 Beta IPSW
Sign into your Apple Developer Program account, head over to the Downloads section and download the iOS 15 and iPadOS 15 beta IPSW file tailor-made for your device. Save it to your desktop for easy access.
Restore / Clean Install iOS 15 / iPadOS 15 Beta
Step 1. Connect your iPhone or iPad to your Mac using a Lightning or USB-C capable where applicable
Step 2. Launch Finder and select your device from the left hand side panel
Step 3. Hold down the left Option key on your keyboard and then click on the Restore iPhone button
Step 4. Select the iOS 15 / iPadOS 15 beta IPSW file you saved on your desktop and off you go
The whole thing may take a while so don't panic if something slows down in between. You can always start over in case you hit a roadblock.
Also keep in mind that Apple's servers will be taking some load in the initial days of the beta. So, if the installation fails, you have that to blame as well.
