Thamma Movie Review:
With director Aditya Sarpotdar (of Munjya fame) at the helm and proven names Dinesh Vijan and Amar Kaushik in the credits as producers, a rib-tickling horror thriller is the big expectation. This time, they also mix in romance and smooches. Between Taadka (Rashmika Mandanna), a fang-bearing betaal (vampire) who rescues smooth-talking, adventure-seeking, reel-making journo Alok Goyal (Ayushmann Khurrana) from a bear in the jungle. Dil ki dhadkan as a synonym for love is tossed out as pyaar conquers all even when the heart has stopped ticking.
A point writers Niren Bhatt, Suresh Mathew and Arun Pulara raise: flesh-relishing betaals who’ve vowed never to drink human blood abide by more principles than human beings who wantonly kill each other. In fact, Yakshasan (Nawazuddin Siddiqui), the betaal who goes against their rules and desires human blood, is the outcaste, chained in isolation. And he’s the one who yearns to be the next Thamma (the leader of the pack) to set new rules.
The entry of all-round actor Ayushmann Khurrana and saucy Rashmika Mandanna adds freshness to the horror universe. Paresh Rawal as Alok’s father who sniffs that Taadka is a different species but paternally inspires the betaal couple to go win the day with their love, is well cast. Faisal Malik, best known for playing Prahlad Pandey in the Amazon series Panchayat, has screen presence as cop PK Yadav. Varun Dhawan’s brief appearance as Bhediya, with the promise of a bigger showdown the next time around, is a welcome garnish.
Sachin-Jigar’s music and background score have the required tempo, rare in moviedom today. Items by Malaika Arora and Nora Fatehi are woven in neatly but don’t have the sensuality of ‘Munni Badnaam’ or Samantha Prabhu’s sensuous ‘Oo Antava’. Better moves and more oomph in the music, the next time, Aditya?
Nawazuddin Siddique’s unpredictable menace is always a thrill and he is well presented with a ghostlike shadow around him. But he’s dispensed with all too soon. Like the makers haven’t got their teeth, oops, fangs, into his character.
Although Bhediya vs Betaal on the terrace and Fangs vs Fangs in the jungle are new ground for battle, the action choreography doesn’t go beyond special effects.
Also, the fun times of Stree and the thrill of Munjya are missed in the vampire empire.
There is, therefore, an all-round unfulfilled feeling at the end, pointing to a screenplay that doesn’t sparkle as much as the premise does.
Watch It or Not? It’s not a completely satisfying peep but checking out a new universe is not a bad idea.
