The Ba***ds Of Bollywood Critic Review:

When spanking new director Aryan Khan ends the first episode with an enforced raid sequence that signs off with ‘Say no to drugs’, you groan and wonder if he’s made this a childishly personal show.

But as Aasmaan Singh (Lakshya), the boy from Delhi, rises, stumbles and bumbles around Mumbai – like desperately signing a 3-film contract with pompous producer Freddy Sodawallah (Manish Chaudhari) that soon has his career in knots – Aryan hooks you until he delivers a knockout punch at the end.

It goes far beyond a glamorous parade of stars who keep popping up, a Ranbir Kapoor appearance most unexpected, Salman Khan turning up at a birthday party and Aamir-SS Rajamouli in a ‘serious debate’. Shah Rukh Khan is served as the cherry on top.

Between Aryan and his colleagues Bilal Siddiqi and Manav Chauhan, they distribute action, emotion, humour and dirty tricks all over the episodes, making it a fulfilling junket that ties up everything neatly. Even washed-up has-been Jaraj Saxena (Rajat Bedi) and his spoofing device have an important part to play.

Sanya (Anya Singh), the manager without a pen and the Badshah mix-up are two brief examples of the humour while Aasmaan’s “This one’s for you dad” is a sample of emotional overwhelming.

Alongside catering to the viewer’s non-stop star gazing (the roll call includes Ranveer Singh and Emraan Hashmi besides half the industry at an awards function), there is a story that keeps moving.

Of superstar and family man Ajay Talvar (Bobby Deol), caring dad to Karishma (Sahher Bambba), who’ll stoop to lowest levels to keep his debut-making daughter away from co-star Aasmaan.

Of Aasmaan’s Delhi boy origins (like SRK himself) with simple, loving parents (Mona Singh, Vijayant Kohli) and Avtar, a bottle-loving musician chacha (Manoj Pahwa) who’s never quite made it.

Of Aasmaan’s friend Parvaiz (Raghav Juyal) with his shady connections.

Of the shadow of Ghafoor bhai (Arshad Warsi) and the underworld that looms over the fringes of the film industry.

Of Karan Johar who represents all that Bollywood stands for – most of all the ability to laugh at itself.

It takes a while to settle down especially with annoying and abusive characters like Parvaiz and Avtar but like the show itself, the characters too grow on you. Right down to Freddy’s obsequious assistant Jeejeebhoy (Meherzan Mazda) and Ajay Talvar’s bodyguard Sukhi (Jameel Choudhary). The long and desperate chase by Ajay Talvar to stop Karishma and Aasmaan may seem over the top but the end justifies the route taken.

It speaks well for the director when there’s a performance prised out of every name in the credits. From the many star names who lend their glitter, Bobby Deol who doesn’t miss a beat with his impressive presence and a relative newcomer like Lakshya Sen who punches and performs well, to the perfect timing of Raghav Juyal, the array of established artistes (Manoj Pahwa, Mona Singh, Rajat Bedi, Manish Chaudhari et al) and fresh faces Anya Singh and Sahher Bambba.
