Jolly LLB 3 Critic Movie Review:

The weak-spined rivalry between Jagdish Tyagi (Arshad Warsi) and “client-chor” Jagdishwar Mishra (Akshay Kumar) evokes barely a smile.

The ‘you-take-her’ volleying between them when a penniless Janki Amma (Seema Biswas) comes to them to file a petition against land-grabbing industrialist Haribhai Khaitan (Gajraj Rao) has no humour.

Mishra’s banter with wife Pushpa (Huma Qureshi) which had such a spark in 2017 has fizzled out in the intervening years.

The gymming, the dating app antics and tearing his hair in the courtroom don’t make Judge Sunder Lal Tripathi (Saurav Shukla) endearing at any point. A Valentine’s Day outing with lady cop Chanchal Chautala (Shilpa Shukla) might’ve been funny if it had ended with Judge Tripathi getting a long bill. But writer-director Subhash Kapoor must stretch it and explain that the Jollys had ‘topi pehnaoed’ him.

That is the problem with the third instalment. It fails to tickle and the main legal battle is stretched beyond bearable limits. The two Jollys who obviously get together vs the biggies (Ram Kapoor as hotshot lawyer Vikram Rai Choudhry) is introduced with Haribhai making several references to “VM” who can’t be extradited from London. “I told VM that industrialists must keep a low profile,” remarks Haribhai. Subhash Kapoor, you’re so subtle.

When farmers are beaten up by the authorities led by a corrupt District Magistrate, a sad song plays in the background to make it even more pathetic.

A dull monologue on farmers, land and development by an economist on the witness stand is followed by another monologue on the same topic by Vikram Rai Choudhry, then Jagdishwar gets his turn to deliver a counter lecture before Janki Amma gets a long solo wail until a goat provides some unscripted relief.

There are just fleeting bits of humour. Like a petition that’s full of mistakes.

But it doesn’t make up for the general witlessness and the doltish writing. The judge tells his assistant that though the Jollys are stupid simpletons, they are imaandaar. But with Mishra getting a male client off the hook though he’s passed himself off as a wife to hoodwink a rich old man, and Tyagi avoiding farmers who can’t pay him, where did the judge spot integrity?

Also, how did the simpletons who couldn’t fill a petition correctly come up with knowledgeable arguments practically overnight to win the case?

But don’t ask logical questions from a film that botches up the reputation of the franchise with neither entertainment nor a smart legal battle.

Unimpressively, the performances are as lacklustre as the narration.

Watch it or not: Revisiting the first two instalments would be better than hoping that the third adds to the brand value.
