At just 21, Asmi Aderay is redefining what it means to be a young artist in today’s music landscape. While many chase viral trends, Asmi is carving her own path, one built on raw honesty, vulnerability, and the kind of powerful vocals that stay with you long after the song ends.
Born and raised in India, Asmi grew up surrounded by music but never saw it merely as background noise. For her, songs were companions, silent witnesses to her joys, heartbreaks, and late night reflections. That connection turned into a calling, and before long, she was writing lyrics that captured emotions too big to stay unspoken.
When asked about the inspiration behind Confess to Me, Asmi Aderay shares that the song came from a deeply honest and emotional place. “It’s about those moments when you know someone has feelings for you, but they just won’t admit it. Writing it felt like letting everything out frustration, hope, vulnerability without overthinking,” she explains. What started as an emotional release turned into something you could also dance to, and she believes that’s why people connect with it; it’s real and unfiltered.
Talking about the creative process, Asmi describes how it all began with a simple feeling rather than a structured plan. She had a lot bottled up emotionally and just started writing without worrying about perfection. The tension and longing she was experiencing shaped both the melody and lyrics. From there, she built the song around that core emotion, adding sounds that felt cinematic yet personal. She intentionally kept the production raw, avoiding too much polish so that the track retained its immediacy and authenticity.
Her album Romance Without Refuge also emerged from a place of emotional intensity. Created during a period of deep longing and isolation, the project reflects the complexity of loving without guarantees and opening up to uncertainty. “The songs almost came together on their own, like they were telling the story for me,” Asmi recalls. That raw, unfiltered emotion became the heart of the album, making it resonate deeply with listeners.
Music, for Asmi, has never been a calculated choice; it has always been part of her life. Growing up in a home filled with sound, from 2000s Bollywood hits to R&B and Western pop, music naturally soaked into her. She would write little bits, hum melodies, and gradually realized this was her way of making sense of the world. “It’s just how I connect with things,” she says.
Her inspirations growing up reflect that cultural mix. She credits Shreya Ghoshal and Sonu Nigam with giving her a love for melody and emotion, while artists like Alicia Keys, Coldplay, and Adele taught her the power of vulnerability and storytelling. She was especially drawn to artists unafraid of feeling deeply those who could turn something personal into something universal. That same emotional honesty is something she has carried into her own music.
Looking ahead, she’s working on a new body of music whether an EP or a string of singles that will further define her sonic identity. Asmi wants to continue blending indie-pop, R&B, and folk-pop in fresh but emotionally grounded ways. She’s equally excited about performing more live shows, both in the U.S. and hopefully back in India, and collaborating with artists across cultures. “It’s all about staying consistent and honest while growing,” she says with excitement. “I can’t wait to share what’s next.”
