In an exclusive throwback conversation, legendary filmmaker B.R. Chopra and his younger brother Yash Chopra sat down for a rare chat where they shared untold stories from their cinematic journey. Among the many highlights of their talk was the surprising story behind the remake of Afsana (1951) into Dastaan (1972) a decision that raised many eyebrows at the time.
B.R. Chopra revealed that when he was preparing for his directorial debut with Afsana, the producer insisted him to cast Dilip Kumar. Respecting the suggestion, the filmmaker approached Dilip Kumar but deep down, he believed Ashok Kumar was the right fit for the role. Eventually, Ashok Kumar played the lead in the film which turned out to be a successful debut for B.R. Chopra, marking his place as one of the iconic filmmakers!
Years later, Dilip Kumar told Chopra that turning down Afsana was one of the decisions he truly regretted in his career. That moment stayed with Chopra. As time passed, this led to the making of Dastaan in 1972 with Dilip Kumar in the lead, fulfilling what could have been, had he accepted Afsana years ago. B.R. Chopra admitted, “We did it perhaps knowingly,” accepting that the remake was intentionally, making it the only remake he did from his own filmography.
The truth behind Dastaan is more personal than many imagined and B.R. Chopra himself confirms it. Don’t miss the full conversation attached below.
