Rajesh Khanna, the actor who is often remembered as India’s first superstar had lived a life filled with both stardom and turbulence. While his marriage to Dimple Kapadia in 1973 is widely known but actress Anita Advani now claims that she shared not only a long relationship but also a private marriage with him.
In a recent conversation to Meri Saheli, Anita revealed that the two tied the knot away from the public eye. “We had a small temple in our home. I had a mangal sutra made, gold with black beads. He made me wear it. Then he applied sindoor and said, ‘From today, you are my responsibility.’ That’s how our wedding happened one night, just like that,” she recalled.
Anita Advani also said that she had known Rajesh Khanna before his marriage to Dimple. “Yes, I came into his life before Dimple Kapadia. But we didn’t get married at the time because I was so young. Eventually, I went back to Jaipur,” she explained.
She further claimed that she began living with Khanna in 2000. “He was very quiet at that point, but after a few drinks he used to get aggressive and angry. I don’t think it was frustration over his career, but he would just be irritated by little things, and anything said by anyone could send him over the edge,” she shared.
Adding on, she admitted their relationship had frequent quarrels. At times, she would leave his home for her sister’s place only to have him send notes and gifts through staff members. “I used to send it back without accepting anything… then after a few days I used to give in and go back to him, because even I used to miss him,” she added.
Despite their bond, Anita said she was kept away from his final rites. She claimed she was stopped from attending his chautha and even suggested bouncers were placed to prevent her entry. “It would have been beneath my dignity to go there after everything. And frankly, it was beneath theirs to treat me that way,” she said emotionally.
After Rajesh Khanna’s passing in 2012, Anita filed a legal case against his family seeking recognition and support. But since the actor remained legally married to Dimple Kapadia, her claims faced challenges.
