In just 18 days since its release Saiyaara directed by Mohit Suri and starring debutants Ahaan Panday and Aneet Padda, has become the biggest surprise hit of 2025. The romantic musical drama opened strong with ₹28.75 crore worldwide, the highest-ever for a male debut lead in Hindi cinema. Now the film has entered the ₹300 crore mark in India and ₹450 crore globally, an achievement that left many surprised, especially with newcomers leading the cast proving their talent!
While Saiyaara continues to dominate the box office and win audience hearts with its emotional storytelling and music, other major releases like Son of Sardaar 2 and Dhadak 2 seem to be struggling to hold their ground.
A Rough Start for Two Big Releases
Despite having a loyal fan base and strong actor names, both Son of Sardaar 2 and Dhadak 2 opened to moderate numbers. Son of Sardaar 2 starring Ajay Devgn and directed by Vijay Kumar Arora, managed ₹5.23 crore overseas on its first day. Meanwhile, debutant Shazia Iqbal’s directorial Dhadak 2 with Siddhant Chaturvedi and Triptii Dimri, made ₹3.5 crore on day one in India, according to Sacnilk.
As the weekend went on, Dhadak 2 added ₹3.75 crore on day 2 and ₹4.15 crore on day 3, ending its first weekend at ₹11.4 crore. On the other hand, Son of Sardaar 2 earned ₹8.25 crore on day 2 and ₹9.25 crore on day 3, closing its opening weekend at ₹24.75 crore. These numbers are not poor but they appear underwhelming when compared to the record-breaking success of Saiyaara. For two films that came with a lot of expectations, the pressure is on.
What’s Working and What’s Not
While Saiyaara continues to connect with audiences through its emotional depth, hard-hitting love story and soulful music, Son of Sardaar 2 and Dhadak 2 seem to be finding it hard to stand out.
Son of Sardaar 2 tells a lighthearted village tale about friendship, unity and a golden mango hunt during a festival. It’s a feel-good story but may not be appealing enough in today’s content-heavy era. On the other hand, Dhadak 2 explores powerful caste-based love in a more serious tone but the film’s early pace hasn’t matched the emotional impact that Saiyaara delivered.
At a time when audiences are becoming more selective, Saiyaara proved that content with heart can still win over high budgets or familiar faces. In a surprising turn of events , even an animated historical film Mahavatar Narsimha has quietly built a strong presence, earning ₹91.25 crore domestically in just 10 days also making it the highest-grossing animated film in India.
Too Many Releases, Too Little Impact?
The problem might not just be the films themselves but the timing. With Saiyaara still performing well and other films like Mahavatar Narsimha attracting niche viewers, it’s becoming harder for mid-range films to get attention. When two similar-genre films like Son of Sardaar 2 and Dhadak 2 release around the same time, the box office gets crowded and both can suffer.
Can They Recover?
Not all hope is lost. Word of mouth still plays a big role in a film’s journey. Interestingly, Mahavatar Narsimha didn’t open well either but picked up later due to positive buzz. If either Son of Sardaar 2 or Dhadak 2 manages to strike a deeper emotional chord or find an audience segment, it could still turn things around. But the competition is tight. And with Saiyaara not slowing down anytime soon, the road ahead looks tough.
Will these two releases find their place or will they be forgotten too soon? The coming days will decide.
