Behind the wide fame of Bollywood’s late legendary choreographer Saroj Khan was a life filled with untold pain. Before she became the ultimate “Masterji” of Hindi cinema whose personal journey was marked by a deeply complex and and quiet struggle, especially her first marriage remains a quiet story which was never really a marriage in the eyes of society.
Saroj Khan was born with the talent that she’s best known for, working in the film industry at the very young age of 3 alongside legendary actor like Balraj Sahni to discovery her love for dance but her mother didn’t understand it, so she eventually took her to a doctor who advised putting her into cinema.
As per the reports in The Indian Express, Saroj Khan met her dance master S Sohanlal at just 12 a well-known choreographer who was 30 years older than her and who was already married being a father of four children. “When you don’t have a parent, your mind is often bothered about filling that void,” she said in a throwback interview with DD. Saroj saw him as a father figure at first, someone who made her feel secure but things took a turn when he tied a black thread around her neck which she believed meant they were married.
She was only 13.
Just a year later, Saroj Khan gave birth to their first child at 14 after which she found out that Sohanlal was already married with four children. “I did not know what marriage meant at that time,” she once said. “He didn’t tell me that he was already married.” Further giving birth to a baby daughter and loosing her in just 8 months left her without any support, as Sohanlal never accepted her as a wife nor been a father to their children. So, Saroj Khan eventually chose to walk away.
Saroj said she continued alone, raising her children and later marrying again to Roshan Khan – this time on her own terms. Her story was often often left in the shadows which speaks of resilience in the face of betrayal.
