
Legendary actor Padma Shri Kota Srinivasa Rao who ruled the screen with more than 750 films, passed away on Thursday, July 11 at the age of 83. This iconic actor’s journey wasn’t just about numbers , it was indeed about the impact he made – from fearsome villains to comic relief to heartfelt character roles there’s no role that he portrayed on bigscreen. There are few actors in the history of Telugu cinema who could switch gears so effortlessly and Kota garu was one of them.
Born on July 10, 1942 in Kankipadu, Andhra Pradesh Kota Srinivasa Rao’s life began far from the spotlight. His father was a doctor and Kota garu initially worked as a State Bank employee but soon after acting called him. Starting with theatre, he made his film debut in 1978 with Pranam Khareedu. From there, there was no looking back!
Kota acted in Telugu, Tamil, Hindi, Kannada and Malayalam films. Whether as a ruthless villain in Siva or delivering laughs in Aha Naa Pellanta he owned each and every frame. Movies like Aa Naluguru, Bommarillu, Attarintiki Daredi and Gabbar Singh stand as proof of his unmatched legacy and talent.
Kota Srinivasa Rao wasn’t just an actor. He was a recipient of nine Nandi Awards, the SIIMA Award and in 2015, he was also honoured with India’s fourth civilian honour Padma Shri. Apart from films, he also served as an MLA from Vijayawada East between 1999–2004 showing his dedication to public service.
Off-screen, Kota was known as a disciplined and grounded man. Married to Rukmini, he faced personal tragedy when his son Kota Venkata Anjaneya Prasad passed away in 2010. Despite that, he kept his commitment to work and his family strong by continuing his profession.
Kota Srinivasa Rao passed away due to age-related health issues at his residence in Hyderabad. His contribution to cinema isn’t just history – it’s a lasting legacy that will inspire generations.
