“C.I.D. Is Male-Dominated Show!” Sai Deodhar Opens Up About Feeling Uncomfortable On Set

Actress Sai Deodhar, known for impactful roles in Saara Akaash, Udaan and Ek Ladki Anjaani Si, recently shared her experience working on cult-classic show C.I.D.. She revealed that the popular crime show was male-dominated which made her uncomfortable due to a lack of screen space and dialogues. Speaking in an interview with Siddharth Kannan , Sai Deodhar said “C.I.D. was a very male-dominated show aur mujhe bada uncomfortable laga. (C.I.D. was a very male-dominated show, and I felt quite uncomfortable.)”

Why Sai Deodhar Felt Uncomfortable in C.I.D.?

Explaining further, Sai mentioned that her discomfort stemmed from not having enough dialogues or meaningful contributions to the cases in the show. She said, “Uncomfortable in the sense – in my screen space. Kyuki ek time pe aisa tha hum sirf sawaal hi puchte the sir (Shivaji Satam) ko. (Uncomfortable in terms of screen space. At one point, all we did was ask questions to Sir (Shivaji Satam).)”

She expressed her frustration about constantly asking questions without playing an active role in solving cases. She recalled questioning Shivaji Satam about it: “Toh maine ek bar sir ko pucha, ‘Sir, humein kuch nahi aata kya, hum toh sirf sawaal hi puch rahe hai. ‘Sir, yeh kya hua?, aise kya hua’ Why can’t we find a solution?’ (I once asked Sir, ‘Don’t we know anything? All we do is ask questions—‘Sir, what happened? How did this happen?’ Why can’t we solve the case?’)”

Why She Left The Show?

Sai Deodhar had just finished Saara Akaash, where she played Flight Lieutenant Monica Singh Kochar, a strong and action-oriented role. Switching from such a powerful character to C.I.D. felt like a step back. She said, “Maine kaha ‘Sir, yeh kaisa character hai. Hum toh sirf sawaal hi puch rahe hai, humein toh kuch karne ko hai hi nahi.’ Toh fir maine vo show chod diya tha. As I was not happy doing that.” (I said, ‘Sir, what kind of character is this? All we do is ask questions; we don’t get to do anything.’ So I left the show because I was not happy doing it.)”

C.I.D. was one of Indian television’s longest-running crime shows, airing on Sony TV from January 1998 to October 2018. Despite being off-air for years, its fanbase remained strong, leading to the return of C.I.D. Season 2 on December 21, 2024. The new season also started streaming on Netflix from February 22, 2025 proving the show’s lasting impact.
