Be Happy Movie Critic Review:
Schoolgirl Dhara (Inayat Verma) dreams of taking a bow under the spotlight, convinced that she’s born to dance.
She is also chirpily precocious as dad Shiv Rastogi (Abhishek Bachchan) dons an apron, makes her breakfast, plaits her hair and mom’s only a wistful memory in a photograph.
Choreographer-turned-director Remo D’Souza is on familiar terrain when he sets up a superstar dance competition. A dream platform for Dhara. Renowned dancer Maggie Madam (Nora Fatehi) spurs Dhara’s dream by trying to convince Shiv that Mumbai’s where they should be for Dhara to train for the competition.
Set in Ooty, bankers Shiv and father-in-law Nadar (Nassar), a doting thatha (grandpa) to Dhara, banter with a few words of Tamizh thrown in.
Four writers (Remo, Kanishka Singh Deo, Chirag Garg, Tusshar Hiranandani) play around these four characters, use dance as a backdrop (Nora must dance, saala) and send across a message heard many times before, don’t worry, be happy.
They try hard to keep it peppy with Shiv being told in a cinema hall, “Hey, Amitabh Bachchan, jhukke baitho.” They build an equation between precocious Dhara and grandpa, they show exasperation at Shiv for being grumpy and resisting the move to Mumbai. They must have a flashback to show what happened to mom, they must have BG songs as Shiv takes Dhara for a long drive and there must be a hint of something amiss when the aspiring dancer has a pain in her leg.
Why other kids aren’t nice to Dhara in her Mumbai school or why Shiv is ignored at the Mumbai branch is inexplicable except to show the inevitable contrast when she starts performing well and success is a magnet that attracts friends.
With a besotted classmate called Prem on the scene, lots of dance (‘Devi aayi…’ in traditional Indian, a Ganpati Bappa BG number on the road with classical taans) and Maggie Madam spreading her ‘Be Happy’ gyaan, there’s a Kuch Kuch Hota Hai moment too, as Dhara plans a Mom 2.0 for dad.
But, set against the dance competition, when life throws an unexpected spanner in the works, it takes Shiv and Nadar all they have to not worry, just be happy. Precocious even tells dad, it’s okay to cry, don’t be macho.
“I had life planned on an excel sheet,” says Shiv.
But life had plans of its own.
The ultimate takeaway from Remo is that it’s not about winning or losing but of the spotlight and a finale, it’s about a dance with a rainbow of emotions and dreams, about dreams being hopes with wings.
Familiar lessons of life continue as the end credits roll.
So, while the lessons aren’t new, the straightforward storytelling is pleasant. Abhishek Bachchan is always endearing as a dream dad, Nassar is reliably efficient and Nora Fatehi is on home ground as a dance teacher. I guess it isn’t Inayat Verma’s fault if she’s asked to mouth lines beyond her years.
Be Happy Movie – Watch Or Not?: Although predictable, it’s a sweet, inoffensive family watch.
