Stree 2 Movie Critic Review:

A Double Helping of Wackiness

The first time around, director Amar Kaushik and writers Raj and DK had sprung a pleasant surprise with a horror-comedy-romance that had ladies’ tailor Vicky (Rajkummar Rao) with his buddies, bookstore owner Rudra (Pankaj Tripathi), Bittu (Aparshakti Khurana) and Abhishek Banerjee (Jana) at their rollicking best. The hilarious freshness of Vicky falling crazily in love with Stree the witch (Shraddha Kapoor) had teased and tickled in uproarious proportions.

Six years later, Amar Kaushik returns with writer Niren Bhatt to make a wackier edition that has a headless horror abducting the young women of Chanderi. With the main cast and their eccentricities already introduced in 2018, there’s no time wasted in re-establishing traits or equations and you meet Vicky and company like long lost friends. Rudra bursts into a song ‘Pooja ke din’ on stage that serves like a peppy synopsis as the opening credits roll.

The plot is thinner but the gags and the scale have multiplied with the franchise value kicking in, the horror-comedy universe growing and a loyal audience looking for fun. Vicky’s dad too wants his son, Chanderi ka Devdas, to have some fun, throwing in wisdom like ‘Virgin oil is fine but a virgin male…’. Among the many scenes that raise much laughter is an early one where Vicky, still madly in love with the witch about whom he knows nothing, not even her name, measures Stree for a new outfit. Rajkummar Rao’s comic timing is just so spot on.

Alongside the humour are jump scares and the horror of a town where women can’t step out of their house – Sarkata is dragging the gender back to regressive times. Much to the tailor’s delight, Stree returns just in time to save him and his pals who join forces to battle the headless terror.  The darzee has to become a superhero – with much help from Stree, an atma that she wants to free and Bhediya (Varun Dhawan) who comes pouncing in from another film.

Bittu has a girlfriend who calls him Bits for short, drawing a “Good you’re not called Tittu” from Vicky. While Bits gets to sing a lullaby to his girl, Rudra gets his own share of romance with the entry of Shama (Tamannaah Bhatia in an item number). Of course, Shama-Parwana lines must creep in. Vicky, Rudra and Bittu have another hilarious play on the word ‘Chitthi’ with Rudra having to sing ‘Chitthi aayi hai’ to finally sort out the confusion. One more on ‘Disha pata nahi’/Disha Patani draws a chuckle.

Akshay Kumar makes a brief appearance in a wacked out sequence over Mumtaz and the Taj Mahal. With Sarkata wanting a Stree ki bali and monster heads multiplying and rebooting, the fun is paused only for a battle with special effects which, incidentally, are stretched and stretched.

But the last scene of Munjya gets replayed for Bhediya to make his presence felt more strongly in the universe. And the fun rolls on as Akshay Kumar gets ‘Killer Thanks’ and Varun Dhawan is given ‘Howling Thanks’.

Although the film is too lengthy, Rajkummar Rao, Pankaj Tripathi, Aparshakti Khurana, Abhishek Banerjee and pretty Shraddha Kapoor have terrific chemistry as a team and continue to be in sparkling form.
