Veteran Malayalam Filmmaker Harikumar Passes Away At 70

Monday evening marked the passing of veteran Malayalam director and screenwriter Harikumar, who succumbed to cancer at a private hospital in Thiruvananthapuram. His departure leaves behind a rich legacy in the realm of impactful cinema.

Over the course of his extensive career spanning decades, Harikumar helmed 18 films, including memorable titles like Sukritham, Udyanapalakan, and Jalakam. He collaborated with esteemed screenwriters such as M T Vasudevan Nair, Lohithadas, Sreenivasan, and Kaloor Denis.

One of his standout works, Sukritham, penned by M T Vasudevan Nair in 1994, garnered widespread acclaim and clinched the National Award for Best Malayalam Film. Across his illustrious career, Harikumar crafted scripts for more than 20 films in the Malayalam industry.

From screenplay to dialogue, his narratives resonated deeply with audiences and received accolades from critics. Beyond mere awards, his movies became integral to Kerala’s cultural landscape, imprinting a lasting legacy on its cinema.

In 2022, Harikumar helmed his final film, “Autorickshawkarante Bharya,” where he served as both director and writer, contributing to the screenplay, story, and dialogues. With a repertoire spanning over 20 Malayalam films, he left an indelible mark on the industry. Additionally, he served as a jury member for the National Film Awards in 2005 and 2008.
