Bollywood’s Jaggu Dada, Jackie Shroff, is celebrating his 67th birthday today, February 1. He has played a variety of characters in the professional landscape through various movies, like “Gardish”, “Khalnayak”, “Border”, “Parinda”, “King Uncle” and there are nearly 250 movies. But he played that one character, which brought a solid change in his life. In 2010, he portrayed “Shirdi Sai Baba” in the movie “Malik Ek”, which was truly an exception, and this actor took 6 months to decide whether to portray it or not.
In an exclusive interview with Lehren Retro, Jackie Shroff shared his journey of working in the movie “Malik Ek”. When director Deepak Balraj Vij asked Jackie Shroff about this role, Jackie first questioned his own ability to play the character of a Saint. That’s why he thought over it a lot for 6 months and then decided to give it a try. He went for a look test; he tried on the attire of Sai Baba, tied a white cloth to his head, and he felt the energy that he could perform Sai Baba. He said that it felt like Sai Baba was guiding him, and Sai Baba brought him to the level he was at that time. Saint Sai Baba led Jackie throughout the process of filming, he added. He elaborates on how he had two different personalities in his casual attire and in costume.
While preparing for this spiritual role, he consumed as much information as he could from internet sources. He adapted Sai Baba’s behavioral qualities, like his anger about lies, his love towards kids etc. There are many movies and television series based on the life of Sai Baba, and hence it was necessary for Jackie Shroff to portray it in a more convincing way, and he did it. That character impacted his life on a larger scale and instilled a sense of spirituality in his life.
On the work front, he was last seen in the movie “Mast Mein Rehne Ka” with Neena Gupta, released in December 2023. His other movie, “Two Zero One Four”, a spy thriller, is about to release in March 2024.
