Instagram Threads is Meta's Take on Twitter as Bird Slowly Heads Towards a Disaster

If you have been staying up to date with everything that is happening over on Twitter, you would know that the bird app is going through a bit of a crisis. Recently, we saw how the platform went through some changes as a tweet limit was imposed where unverified users could only view 600 posts, new users were limited to 300 posts, and verified accounts would be able to read 6,000 posts per day. According to Musk, the change was to combat the "extreme levels of data scraping & system manipulation." While this issue seems to be temporary, Meta thinks otherwise as the company has launched its version of Twitter called Instagram Threads.

Instagram Threads looks to take on Twitter, but will it be enough to make an impact?

The new service, Threads or Instagram Threads, will debut as a new app on July 6. The company has published a landing page, as well, and while we don't know much about the app from the page alone, folks over at 9to5Google have managed to surface some information about the upcoming app, which looks interesting.

Even though it is a separate app, it will still be a part of Instagram and will have the same username, display name, and profile picture from Instagram. If you block someone on Threads, they will also be blocked on Instagram. You will also get similar profile links to make identification easier.

To make Instagram Threads stand out, Meta has introduced a number of changes. For instance, following and unfollowing people work slightly differently here. The app allows you to follow everyone that you follow on Instagram automatically. In the case of a private account, users will be sent a follow request, and speaking of private accounts. These will also have the option to pre-approve these requests. You will also be able to modify pre-approvals for specific accounts, allowing you greater control over who should be a part of your life and who shouldn't.

The most interesting thing about Instagram Threads is that Meta is planning on introducing a feature that would let people from other federated social networks connect with users on Threads. The feature is not going to be available at launch, but I do like the idea behind this, and I am really hoping that this takes off and other apps can become a part of this "fediverse" as Meta is currently putting it. The app/service is set to launch on Thursday, and we will be keeping an eye out for the official announcement. So far, it does sound like a very
