You can try these methods and make the one you find easiest as your go-to for opening the app.
Open Windows Terminal Windows 11
There are various ways to go about this, and you can pick whichever method you find the most convenient. Try out all these methods and tell us your favorite.
Method 1: WinX Menu
Step-1: Right-click on the Windows icon on the taskbar to open the WinX menu (Shortcut Keys: Win + X)
Step-2: Click on Windows Terminal or Windows Terminal (Admin) if you want elevated rights.
Method 2: Open Windows Terminal on Windows 11 Using Search
- Click on the search icon on the taskbar.
- Type Windows Terminal and click Open.
BONUS Tip: Right-click on the Windows Terminal search result and select Run as administrator to get elevated privileges.
Method 3: Start Menu
Step-1: Click on the Windows icon on the taskbar or use the Windows key on the keyboard to open the Start menu.
Step-2: Select All apps.
Step-3: Scroll down till you reach the ‘W’ apps and locate Windows Terminal. Click on it to open the app.
BONUS tip: If you want the app with admin privileges, Right-click on the Windows Terminal option, select More, and select Run as administrator.
Method 4: Open Windows Terminal on Windows 11 Using Run
- Use the shortcut keys Win + R to open the Run box.
- Type wt.exe and press Enter.
Method 5: Desktop Shortcut
Step-1: Right-click on your desktop, hover the cursor over New and select Shortcut.
Step-2: Enter the following in the Type the location of the item text box:
%LocalAppData%\Microsoft\WindowsApps\wt.exe
Step-3: Click Next.
Step-4: Type Windows Terminal in the Type a name for this shortcut textbox.
Step-5: Select Finish.

Method 6: Pin to Taskbar
- Click on the search icon and type Windows Terminal.
- Right-click on the Windows Terminal option and select Pin to taskbar.
- The Windows Terminal app will now be available on the taskbar, and you can click on it to open it anytime you want.
Method 7: Startup App
If you access Windows Terminal regularly, you can set it up so that whenever you start your Windows 11 PC, the Windows Terminal opens up automatically. To do this, follow the steps below:
Step-1: Open the Windows Terminal app. (Use any of the above methods).
Step-2: Click on the downward arrow at the top of the Window. Select Settings.
Step-3: Turn the toggle switch On next to Launch on machine startup.
Step-4: Click Save.
Step-5: Close the app.
Now, whenever you start your machine, Windows Terminal will launch. If you want to disable this option, follow all the steps in method seven and turn the toggle switch next to Launch on machine startup Off.
