Like Zoom or Google Meet, it is also possible to record a Microsoft Teams meeting and it takes just a few simple steps. However, there are certain limitations and features like auto-delete are currently missing. Thankfully, Microsoft has listened to the feedback and new features are on their way.
All Microsoft Teams meetings can be recorded, but the feature needs to be enabled by an IT admin or the organizer with administrator privilege. Microsoft Teams recordings are apparently stored in the cloud and companies have the option to use OneDrive or SharePoint too.
To reduce storage clutter, Microsoft Teams is getting a new feature called “auto-expiration”. As the name suggests, this will allow users to set an expiration date for recording files stored in SharePoint or OneDrive. After a recording expires, it will be removed from the cloud storage.
When the feature is enabled, Microsoft will automatically delete recordings after 60 days if no action is taken. The 60-day window is the default value selected by Microsoft. This is based on data from Microsoft Teams customers.
Microsoft observed that users typically don’t watch recordings after 60 days, which is why 60 days is the default window. With the auto-expiration feature, Microsoft is hoping to reduce the amount of storage consumes on OneDrive or SharePoint, and make room for new recordings.
If you do not like this new feature, you can extend the default expiration date via the Admin Portal. Remember that Microsoft will notify administrators when a recording is about to delete from the cloud. After a meeting has expired, IT admins be able to retrieve that file within 90 days.
Live transcription
Microsoft Teams recording will now start live transcription by default. According to a new update on the roadmap, “if both recording and policy settings are enabled, turning on the recording will also start live transcription”.
For those unfamiliar, Live transcription is a feature that displays a written record of the spoken text and each speaker is identified, Live transcription is captured automatically in near real-time using AI/ML, and it will now automatically appear in your recordings.
Additionally, Microsoft is also testing support for Office apps integration in Teams, allowing users to configure the default for documents and PowerPoint.
